Zonolite Attic Insulation ("ZAI") was produced and sold from the 1920/1930s to 1984 in the form of attic insulation pebbles. Asbestos proved to be a health risk leading to devaluation of such properties. Consumers and construction companies installed it on top of ceilings, as a means of thermal insulation. In industry it was described as loose-fill, non-roll vermiculite home attic insulation.
In only two months time, 31 October 2009, the gate will close on new property related ZAI vermiculite asbestos claims. The presence of asbestos insulation on a property poses an asbestos risk. It sparks the fear of asbestos exposure and the probability of eventually contracting asbestos mesothelioma lung cancer. Mesothelioma is a terrible terminal disease with poor prognosis.
Not only have the “asbestos properties” suffered loss in value, landlords also incurred the expenses of asbestos abatement.
ZAI was sold or manufactured by Grace under the brand name of "Zonolite Attic Insulation" and under other brand names over time.
